Mycroft stares at his phone in horror.

The fall of a small, new republic, coinciding with today of all days?

He prayed it a false conclusion.

Anthea burst in the office a moment later.

“Sir, the armies-”

“Yes, yes, I know,” he said, weary at the thought that not 48 hours after declaring its independence, the tiny Eastern European state had fallen into disarray, the south once again separating from the north, and the north retaken by the regime.

Her lip twitches, just barely, and she waits in the doorway.

“Pull aid,” he says in an exhale, picking up a different phone, “while we figure out how they’re going to spin this.”

She nods, and disappears.

Mycroft dials a number he has memorized but loathes to use, but before he can hit ‘call,’ an incoming call interrupts him.

It looks like he was right, after all.

Mycroft holds his head in his hands as he answers.

“Happy Birthday!” the cheerful criminal chirps. “Did you like the present?”

“I’m not sure you understand the meaning of the word, Mr. Moriarty.” He will not gripe over the loss of a week’s work.

“I got you a country! I thought you liked countries.”

It’s a shame the full weight of his facial expressions are lost over the phone.

AU where Mycroft’s umbrella is some sentient/magic object except Mycroft has no idea

YOUR TAGS OMG

Does it cockblock Jim by constantly tripping him into stuff? Does Mycroft just assume that Jim is uncommonly clumsy? Does Magic Brolly dump a hip flask of cheap whiskey down the back of Jim’s pants because a) lol and b) Mycroft will smell the booze and decide Jim is a drunk and want nothing to do with him because he’s already babysitting one addict and does not need a second, kthx.

Does Jim try to strangle Magic Brolly but cannot find it’s neck? And then eventually realize that brollys don’t have respiratory systems? Does he turn all Conspiracy Guy trying to plan an elaborate murder of Magic Brolly, only for it to be destroyed in a freak wind event (much to Mycroft’s dismay) and Jim has a full on Anderson-style breakdown?

#jimcroft#I NEED TO KNOW#soo many questions#do they bury Magic Brolly together?#and Jim buys Mycroft a drink because Mycroft is mourning his favoritest ever brolly#and then they wake up in the morning naked in Jim’s bed with no idea how they got there#and Mycroft is like ‘okay but if we’re really doing this you have to stop drinking#and Jim flips his shit ‘I AM NOT A DRUNK YOUR BROLLY SET ME UP OMG’#but ofc he totally goes to AA because Mycroft makes the eyes at him#so once in a week he sits in a church basement half-comatose and drowning himself in crappy coffee#and its super worth it because Mycroft is so proud of him when he comes to pick him up#and that is how Jim discovers there is no low he won’t sink to to get some Mycroft D

Jim: YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE! IT’S YOUR UMBRELLA, OR ME

Mycroft: The umbrella, of course

then jim has a meltdown

I mean I guess after the wind freak event they can go umbrella shopping together

they’re friends

they’re ex-boyfriends what are you talking about

Ex-boyfriends who remained friends after their different ambitions* meant their paths in life diverged covers it neatly enough for me.

*You would think torturing dead humans in an illusory hell dimension and forcing marooned and enslaved aliens to fight to the death in gladiatorial combat on a trash planet (optionally banging Tom Hiddleston) would be compatible career goals but their schedules just would not sync up.
