Sherlock and John once left the country for a case- completely unannounced. As revenge for their recklessness Mycroft and Mary took over the detective business for a time. They were extremely well received because of course they were faster, more polite, and in line with the law. When John and Sherlock got back they had absolutely no clients and had to negotiate with Mycroft and Mary to get them to stop- negotiating of course included several humiliating apologies.
-They do this all the time.
-Mary makes Mycroft wear the deerstalker.
-Mycroft ~negotiates~ with Greg to get more cases.
-There’s a scoreboard in Baker Street for most cases completed in a week. All spots belong to Mycroft and Mary.
One of the most under appreciated thing in BBC Sherlock is how much emotional burden of his family Mycroft carries around and yet he’s never truly appreciated. Least of all my his mother. His childhood was stolen from him and he was forced to be mature prior to his time. He wasn’t given any chance to be coddled and cosseted like every other normal kid and sometimes you can see him envying Sherlock for being the centre of their mother’s attention and a part of him secretly wishing that to be true for himself too.
I can just see his thoughts in gifs …
“You never seemed to care when I got shot.”
“Always the same. Always do all I can and be met with resentment.”
“It’s my fault. I tried. If only I could have been better.”
“Nothing I did was ever good enough for you, was it? Why can’t you see me just once?”
Okay… so the interrogation they randomly cite throughout season two.
Like, they bring him in and there’s only dull, normal government spooks, and then… oh, wait. Who’s this?
And he’s different and clever and not afraid of him and sexy as hell. So he’s flirting relentlessly but then they start with the questions about Sherlock and it clicks and how dare Sherly keep such a wonderful little secret from him for all this time.

Back when Mycroft was still low on the food chain he had to do his own legwork like some kind of insurance inspector and Jim was always delighted with his nonchalant demeanor because it meant he could show up at the scene of crime and never get charged with anything or taken in because he’s a consultant, he never directly has anything to do with the crime—and Mycroft is sometimes even very flattering because he always picks up on Jim’s contributions. But as Mycroft furthered his career he started showing up less and less and then after a while he wouldn’t show up personally even if the case was huge and it was so deeply frustrating for Jim
Irene: Mycroft was on your little plane the other night.
Jim: *anguished scream*
